Sick

That's how his mother and I feel. Carter has been put on antibiotics due to the nurses finding some blood in his stool. He is probably not going to eat for the next 48 hours (beginning this morning) because they're worried about his intestines being infected. We are hoping it's not necrotizing entercolitis (NEC) because that is bad. I won't go into detail but google it if you want to be extra scared for him. Carter has an iv in now to get nutrition and he endured a catheter today for an hour or so so they could get a urine sample. He was a champ during both, only squealing for a couple of seconds before going right back to business as usual.

The good news of the day is that he has had two X-rays and they both have returned normal results. The last was even described as "stone cold normal" by the NNP here. The X-rays are a good tool to search for NEC and like I said, they haven't found anything suggesting it other than the blood in his stool.

The signs he is sick are starting to show their faces however. When we left for dinner, he was acting relatively normal. We expected to come back to a very unhappy and hungry baby since he hadn't eaten all day. We arrived and found him sound asleep and learned that he had pretty much been that way since we left. Acting fussy would have been a sign of normality but his calmness told us something was wrong. He has given up a fair amount of blood today to the labs and this presents another potential problem. Remember the epo shots that he received for 5 days in his thighs because his red blood cell count was low? He may have to endure that again or get another blood transfusion altogether.

We are hopeful that his antibiotic drop works tonight and makes him feel at least slightly better. Tomorrow we expect some results from his blood, urine and stool cultures and another round of blood work sent to the lab. As I'm writing this, Carter has become fussy. Hopefully this is him being pissed off that no one has fed him today. That would be a normal reaction.

Our little fighter needs some help in the prayers and well-wishes department as always. We know that God will not give him anything that he cannot handle but we don't enjoy watching him endure such tests. Pray for a better tomorrow. We love him very much.
