Bumps in the Road pt. 2

The doctor, nurse practitioner, and nurse just completed rounds with Carter. They are still very pleased with his progress but are concerned with his erythropoietin levels in his blood. Hmm, what is erythropoietin you may ask. It is the hormone that your kidneys produce to create red blood cells. His kidneys are being typical preemie kidneys (and they are being right on schedule too) and having a dip in the amount of this hormone, therefore making him anemic.

This is a partial reason for his bradys they believe - along with his tube not being in deep enough. But don't worry, he starts a week long round of oral iron supplements and subcutaneous leg injections of epogen - the hormone based drug that will kick start his kidneys into normal production mode and also help his bone marrow produce more red blood cells and creatinine.

This is something that term baby's and preemies go through. The difference is that term babies more often than not pull themselves through it and preemies need a little accelerated help.

He still needs prayers and is being a typical preemie. The good thing is that he's keeping pace with where he should be and is under excellent care. These shots will truly hurt his mother and I more than him as we don't like to see him in an ounce of pain - but we understand the necessity.
